Project Description

This project marks a significant achievement for Total Construction, the successful delivery of our first Data Centre project!

Having completed the early works, Total Construction was awarded the contract to complete the construction of this Data Centre which is composed of ground floor slab with a level 1 front office, precast concrete perimeter walls and structural steel roof with Kingspan roof sheeting.

Completed to the highest standards of safety and quality, this state-of-the-art facility incorporates innovative solutions for efficient cooling, robust power infrastructure and advanced security.

1. Power

The buildings are maintained and supplied by an outdoor 66kV substation. The substation structure was delivered by Total Construction and handed over to the power supplier to fit the substation. Ensuring uninterrupted power, the team installed Battery Packs to supply 8 off generators in case of blackout or brownout power.

2. Cooling

Servers and other equipment in the Data Centre generate heat, which can damage servers and other equipment. These must be expelled to protect the equipment. Total Construction managed the Design and Construction of mechanical services which encompasses chillers and chilled water pipes serving the Computer Room air conditioning units within the data hall housing the servers and other back-of-house infrastructure.

3. Security

Total Construction installed a complex on-site security to protect against physical threats which includes:

  • Perimeter fencing with motion sensor lights and cameras.
  • Biometric security systems.
  • Security guard house with security gates – only authorised personnel will have access to the data centre.
  • Proximity card readers.

Project Highlights

  • Total GFA: 16,000m²
  • 33 megawatts capacity
  • 9 Data Halls + a Level 1 Office
  • 11km of Cable Tray throughout
  • 12 External Generator Units for uninterrupted backup power
  • 593 Precast Concrete Panels (Buildings & FP1 Retaining Walls)
  • 508 Tonnes of Structural Steel
  • 6,000m³ of Concrete poured
  • 14,115m2 of Roof Structure
  • Advanced Mechanical Cooling using chilled water pipes and chiller units
  • Working closely with the Power Authority to produce purpose-built substation ensuring reliable power supply and future-proofing for the next phase of development.

Safety Achievements

Key Stats:

  • 511,647 hours worked
  • 2,350 construction workers inducted
  • LTIFR: 2.0
  • 625 HSE Inspections completed

Managing the complexities of high-voltage assets, we implemented a comprehensive energisation procedure, ensuring workforce safety during power-up. To maintain high safety standards, we introduced site-specific high-risk inspections and permits for critical activities, including:

  • Energisation & Electrical Safety
  • Crane Lifts & Lifting Operations
  • Excavations
  • Demolition
  • Traffic, Plant, and People Interactions
  • Working at Heights

Our robust safety culture, fostered by our site team and subcontractors, was key to our success. We celebrated this with monthly recognition awards for those prioritising safety.

Overcoming Challenges

We worked closely with the client’s consultants to ensure there were no unexpected hurdles or delays with the planning and permit process. To expedite the program, we started on site whist the changes in design were implemented architecturally and structurally.

Innovations

We utilised staging strategies with workflows on site to progress building works whist the design was resolved. To align with global standards, client’s expectations and reporting time frames, Total Construction took on the initiative of hyper-scaling our safety system. We worked closely with all stakeholders to ensure the project was delivered on time, on budget, safely and to the highest standards of project delivery.

Engaging stakeholders and maintaining attention to detail, Total Construction delivered a world-class Data Centre, showcasing our commitment to excellence and setting a strong foundation for future data infrastructure projects.
