TOTAL – MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Meet Jason Li (Site Engineer), Blake Bennett (Contracts Administrator) and George Joukhador (Cadet) from Total.  They are the team overseeing the Greenstar endorsement process for the $36m KOPWA aged care home project currently under construction and due to open early next year.

This state-of-the-art aged care building has been designed and approved as a Greenstar-4 Best Practice rated building. The built environment is currently the world’s single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and is known to consume around a third of our water, whilst generating 40 per cent of our waste.

This is Total’s first Greenstar aged care project, and as such we are working closely with our consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and our valued client, KOPWA to assess the result independently.  “It is exciting to be identified as leaders, producing our part in embedding sustainability into the sector whilst building quality aged care buildings that enhance a sustainable and energy efficient Aged Care sector” Jason Says.

Jason goes on to say “It feels good to be working with Total and achieving our small part of reducing the impact of climate change, enhancing our health & our quality of life, driving resilient outcomes for aged care buildings, whilst also contributing to the transformation to a sustainable economy”.

Following are a few of the many initiatives Total is adhering to achieve this 4-star rating:

  • The selected concrete mix from Boral is called ‘Envisia Mix’- a mix containing recycled water and aggregate components with a significant reduction in Portland cement without compromising the strength and properties of concrete, achieving a lower carbon concrete.
  • 90% of all cabling, pipes, flooring are sourced from manufacturers that meet the Best Practice Guidelines for PVC production.
  • 95% of the selection of our paints, sealants, adhesives, and carpets are low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and contain fewer than 50 grams per litre of volatile compounds. This reduces pollution and increases indoor air quality. One example is through the paint selection of Dulux’s ‘Enviro2’ mix.
  • Waste management- 90% of waste generated during construction and demolition has been diverted from land fill. We are achieving this outcome by working closely with Bingo Industries.
