The construction industry has traditionally been perceived as very male-dominated. However, Steve Taylor, Managing Director of Total Construction, is actively trying to change all that.
“It’s about time the blokey workplace culture went the way of the dinosaurs,” he says. “Our leadership team is actively championing diversity and inclusivity wherever we can – not just across our business as a whole but in the wider community. Leadership is about providing people with the opportunity to be the best they can be. It’s one of the reasons we sponsor so many grassroots women’s and men’s sporting organisations.”
Total Construction currently sponsors four clubs across Sydney: Northern District Cricket, Balmain Junior Soccer, Pennant Hills AFL, and Parramatta Two Blues, one of Australia’s strongest women’s rugby union teams.
“All four clubs are pathways up to State level and achieving even greater goals,” says Steve. “I played grade cricket for Northern Districts and AFL with the Pennant Hills club. My daughter plays for Balmain Junior Soccer. They do an incredible job with the kids and have something like two and a half thousand registered players. It’s such a privilege to be able to support these institutions. So much of what you learn in sport converts into the working environment, like collaboration and teamwork, and having each other’s backs. We see it as our responsibility to provide players – both women and men — with the tools they need to reach their full potential.”
