New Project | McCain Foods Heat Recovery Project
Our Total Special Projects team in Victoria is pleased to announce we have been awarded the Fryer Heat Recovery project for McCain Foods!
The team will be delivering a multi-level building extension to the existing potato processing plant in Ballarat, forming part of a broader heat recovery and process heat electrification initiative.
The broader initiative aims to reduce the site’s natural gas usage by around 21%, by incorporating advanced mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) technology to capture and reuse waste heat from fryer exhaust systems.
This project represents a technically complex upgrade within an active processing environment, requiring careful coordination and delivery planning to maintain ongoing operations, while integrating new infrastructure into existing plant systems.
The scope of works will include demolition, earthworks, structural construction, building services, external civil works and associated infrastructure upgrades.
Total Construction’s focus will be on minimising disruption of the existing facility’s daily operations and maintaining access, safety and hygiene throughout the build. The team will need to coordinate works alongside McCain’s mechanical and electrical contractors within the constrained, high-risk environment. This will require detailed planning and sequencing, strong communication, and continuous interface management.
The project is being funded by the Australian Government Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is expected to be completed by early 2027.
