Project Update | Kennards Self Storage Chatswood
Project Overview
The team is making excellent progress on the retrofit of the former Westpac Disaster Recovery Centre, transforming the five-storey building into a state-of-the-art Kennards Self Storage facility in Chatswood, NSW.
Delivered under a Construction Management contract, Stage 1 involves converting the existing building into a fit-for-purpose facility that maximises net lettable area and aligns with Kennards’ operational needs and standards.
Located opposite Bunnings, and just a few hundred metres from Kennards’ existing Mann Street location, the site offers outstanding visibility and accessibility. The facility will boast over 400 units and offer an extra 4,000m² of storage space to the area.
The showroom will be separate to the storage space, positioned with high visibility on the Smith St entrance.
The project includes:
- 400 units and an extra 4,000m² of storage space in Stage 1, which will grow to over 10,000m² in later stages.
- A strategic two-phase approach allowing for a quicker initial launch and supporting future scalability.
- Adaptive reuse of the existing structure designed to maximise net lettable area.
- Retrofit of the existing HVAC systems, allowing the existing mechanical air and exhaust systems to be reutilised and upgraded to meet Kennards’ ventilation requirements.
- Upgrade to the fire fighting system including sprinkler system across all levels which is outdated and doesn’t meet the facility’s new purpose.
- Removal of existing in-ground diesel tanks which lie in close proximity to the boundary line retaining wall and the area backfilled.
- An existing onsite above ground OSD tank lies above the diesel tanks and needs to be reinstated to the exact levels as current

Construction Update
The team have completed a strategic demolition sequence and are well into the fitout of the storage units, working down from Level 5. With the fitout now 80% complete, the team have commenced external works.

This past Sunday, TOTAL team members, along with their family and friends, came together at community locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to participate in Australia’s largest tree planting and nature care event: Planet Ark’s National Tree Day.
