Celebrating the Commencement of the Fit-out of dnata's new Flight Catering Facility

We’re excited to share we have been awarded the construction contract for the internal fit-out of  dnata catering & retail’s flight catering facility at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI)!

This week, we celebrated the commencement of the project onsite with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with key stakeholders from dnata catering & retail, WSI and Total Construction.

Following the ceremony, the group walked through the completed base build and discussed the plan to transform the site into a world‑class catering facility, capable of producing up to three million meals annually for domestic and international airlines.

This project is built on a long-standing relationship between Total Construction and dnata catering & retail, formerly Alpha Flight Services. We have completed a number of major and minor construction/fit-out projects for dnata catering & retail over the past 18 years right across Australia. Total Construction has supported dnata catering & retail with facility upgrades ranging from 1,500m² to 10,000m², including commercial kitchens, bakeries, cool rooms, freezers, secure duty-free areas, packaging rooms and truck bays. Our mutual trust and respect for each other has enabled the partnership to thrive and deliver high-quality projects servicing airports nationally.

Thank you to Ivan Silveira, Brett Peipers & Mersad Mundzic from dnata catering & retail and Warwick McInnes from WSI. Our NSW Delivery Team, alongside our Food & Beverage Team, look forward to collaborating with you on this milestone project.

Project Description

The project will transform the freshly built base building, developed by WSACO, into a fully operational catering hub, spanning over 4,300m².

Our NSW Delivery Team, in collaboration with our specialist Food & Beverage Team, will deliver:

  • Façade modifications for new services and roller doors.
  • Extension of the mezzanine office to enhance circulation.
  • External works including lift shafts, southern office extension and northern plant platform to support key services.
  • Internal fit-out including receivals and dispatch docks, cool rooms, freezers, wash-up areas, cold shell hot kitchen, equipment make-up zones, and wastewater treatment plant and plantrooms.
  • Installation of fully integrated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and refrigeration systems.

Overcoming Challenges Within an Aviation Environment

As the facility is located within the Airside zone, aviation security is paramount. Our team’s specialist knowledge in the Food & Beverage manufacturing sector and experience delivering in-flight catering facilities will ensure we meet the highest standards of food safety and unique aviation security and protocols.

Having worked closely with dnata catering & retail on several flight catering facilities across the country, our experience and understanding of the aviation industry will ensure we deliver a project that meets the unique aviation security standards and protocols. It will also enable us to streamline processes and deliver the project efficiently and cost-effectively.

A Future-Focused and Flexible Design

The facility has been designed with flexibility for future expansion to accommodate dnata catering & retail’s anticipated growth at Western Sydney International Airport. This includes the expansion of production zones, storage zones and additional dispatch docks to accommodate increased production capacity.

We’re excited to share the project’s progress over the months ahead.
