TOTAL was awarded the contract to design and construct a significant refurbishment for BlueCare Acacia Gardens Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF). The Australian Government has contributed $8.9 million towards the BlueCare Toowoomba Refurbishment and upgrade project. The work will be carried out over eight stages and with accreditation from the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC), TOTAL will report regularly for the different stages. By upgrading the built environment, the Client has a vision of transforming the large, old-style village with a strong lifestyle and hospitality focus; bringing homely atmospheres while promoting residents’ independence and choice around lifestyle enabling their desire for self-respect, dignity and a continuous quality of life.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

TOTAL were in the fortunate position of providing a local high calibre project team that has successfully delivered for Aged Care refurbishment projects previously. The team are able to readily interpret BlueCare’s needs of adhering to detailed site requirements, staging and sequence management, and minimising environmental and hygiene risks which become critical during demolition and construction phases. These risks include dust control, noise control and debris removal in a live operational Aged Care environment.

INNOVATIONS

Completing the design while complying with the design intent and requirements, along with a solid appreciation of staging and sequencing needs will provide smooth facilitation of the project through an ordered decanting and recanting of room approach. This understanding of working in a live environment allows for the flexibility required to ensure the RACF still operates during the construction phase.
