Construction of a 10 bed extension to an existing aged care facility

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Total Construction was engaged by Thompson Estates to construct a new 10 bed extension to their existing facility on Chesterville Road, Glen Waverley.

This was our first project with Thompson Estates, but our third with architect Roy Hodgson.

The scope comprised the construction of a new extension over the top of an existing single level 5 bed/ activities wing. The existing 120 bed aged care facility remained fully operational for the duration of the works. We also made some minor alterations to the exterior of the building to accommodate the new works.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

The construction site was at the rear of the facility – accessibility was a critical management item for the success of the first floor of the extension. The facility has neighbouring properties on both sides which meant tight rear access at best and a focus on noise/ traffic reduction to ensure the neighbours were not unduly affected by the works.

INNOVATIONS

As a means of managing costs, Total offered alternative methodologies and products at tender stage including an alternative lift package which were accepted by the client.
