Construction of an Electrical Substation for Sydney Light Rail.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project involves the construction of an electrical substation to supply to part of the Sydney Light Rail network. It involves mechanical, electrical and building services works along with the building construction.

Works include ground excavation and formation of in-ground trenches for electrical cabling. Support steel within trenches to allow installation of electrical panels (by others). Blockwork walls and concrete roof slab. Mechanical HVAC, fire and general lighting fit-out and an architectural façade and doors to suit Ausgrid and Alstom requirements.

INNOVATIONS

Total Construction worked with consultants to produce structural steel shop drawings from the client 3D model. Over 55 drawings with intricate details were produced and contributed to the fabrication and delivery process.

CHALLENGES

The ground works presented numerous challenges. Challenges included heritage find, storm water flooding, failed geotechnical tests (unsuitable material) and hitting the water table. Total re-worked storm water piping, excavated material and placed geo-fabric and aggregate material resolving the issue with minimum impact to the construction program.
