Construction of a new Child Care Centre incorporating a heritage listed building.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project was for the Design & Construction of a new 120 place Child Care Centre built over 3 levels incorporating a decommissioned substation built in 1928 which is subject to a heritage order.
Demolition and excavation were completed prior to Total’s commencement on site. Our works included the construction of an underground car park and 2 levels of learning and play spaces, including the restoration and integration of the existing heritage structure.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
A tight site due to the building footprint which takes up the whole site area, including the need to retain the existing heritage building.
The basement to the new section of the building was cut out of rock. High voltage overhead lines ran parallel to 2 boundaries of the site with a primary school located adjacent to the site.
INNOVATIONS
Whilst being mostly constructed by conventional techniques, savings were made with the use of Bondeck in the structure to reduce form work/ fill required in the lower basement areas. Design finalisation undertaken by Total Construction as part of the design and construction contract led to increased efficiencies and time savings that reduced the construction process.
