Construction of a new 31-bed ward and extension and refurbishment to an existing hospital.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project entailed the construction of a new 31-bed ward, new 28-bed recovery ward, four new operating theatres, a new expanded Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) facility, and car parking.

Flynn, Kenny and Burnett wards were totally refurbished along with the construction of a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) facility within the existing building whilst the hospital remained fully operational. Detailed demolition of the existing ICU made way for the first ever Hybrid Cathode Laboratory/Operating Theatre to be installed in Australia.

The hospitals’ Emergency Department entrance was refurbished and opened up with a new main entrance and covered ambulance bay constructed whilst the department remained fully operational.

The existing Kenny and Flynn wards were also refurbished with the works staged to ensure that the hospital had enough beds to remain fully operational.

The original Burnett ward was converted into the new ICU and CCU. The works included extensive service upgrades to the mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire and medical gases services to aid future-proofing of the hospital.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Ensuring that the hospital remained fully operational meant our project team was based on site where many planning and operational meetings were held between the stakeholders. These meetings were critical to ensuring the safety of all people on site.
