Construction of a new multi-purpose hall and gymnasium.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Total Construction was awarded the contract for construction management of the redevelopment of the school gymnasium. The specification required additional area to the existing facility to accommodate 2 basketball courts and tiered retractable seating for 600 people. The facility will cater for whole school assemblies and as a performance hall capable of seating 1,500 on such occasions.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

The site is on a flood plain of the Yarra River so the building is elevated above the adjacent playing fields. This elevation resulted in an enhanced aspect to the design and offered the architects the opportunity to create a very interesting building design.

A design attribute includes for the western wall featuring full-width glazing of variable height that will afford a panoramic vista of the city beyond the sports fields. The floor structure will ensure a surface satisfactory to the highest accreditation levels for basketball and other indoor sports associations.

This project was awarded ‘Excellence in Construction’ (Commercial Building under $5m) by the Master Builders Association of Victoria.
