Alterations and additions to an existing operational 47 bed aged care facility

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Total Construction was awarded the project for the alterations and additions to a single storey residential aged care facility to accommodate a further 67 beds. The upgrade will incorporate a 17 bed specialist dementia wing, communal areas including new gardens, courtyards, function and dining rooms.

The work comprises demolition, construction of a new entrance and foyer on the ground floor, western wing extension on the ground floor, western wing extension on the 1st floor, eastern wing extension and external works including car park, roadwork, storm water drainage and connection of services.

Construction methods involve ground floor concrete and 1st floor suspended slab, internal walls and roof trusses with purpose designed steel.

Construction materials will include gyprock internal wall lining with various finishes of paint, vinyl and wallpaper. Floor coverings will be vinyl, carpet and tiles. The roof will consist of prefinished corrugated iron, and external windows and doors will be powder coated aluminium.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

On commencement of the demolition of the existing building, we discovered that the floor slabs weren’t constructed as documented. This required meeting with the design team to discuss options, taking into consideration cost and time.
