Total’s study assistance program proves a winner!
13 August 2018

If you have ambition, Total is here to support you. Our people are our most important asset, so we’ve introduced a study assistance program that is helping employees to reach their full potential. We checked in with program participant, Hamish Kearns, to gauge his progress.

What’s your current role with Total Construction.

Site Foreman.

How long have you been with the company?

One year.

What are you studying?

I’m taking the Diploma in Building and Construction. I’m doing it at night and through web seminars, as well as assessments on the weekend - whatever it takes to fit it in around work. It’s going really well.

What’s your ambition?

I’ve always wanted to move up. I’m a carpenter by trade and I want to become a site manager, maybe a project manager. With the diploma, I’ll have the qualifications I need and also be able to apply for a builder’s licence.

What’s been your experience of Total’s study assistance initiative?

I wanted to do some study to improve my knowledge and get ahead in my career. Someone in my team said to get in touch with HR and I did. It was really easy. I went to them with the course guidelines and they handled all the paperwork for me. I just feel really valued. They’ve shown me such dedication and commitment. It’s been absolutely fantastic.

Is the study assistance program expensive?

No! I talked through everything with Total and we found a way for me to study that fits in with my budget.

How long until you graduate?

Some of my experience counts towards the degree so the whole thing only takes 40 weeks!
