AGED-CARE SOLUTIONS BY THE LOCALS FOR THE LOCALS.

Churches of Christ: Warwick Integrated Community Project

People living in regional Australia often do it tough when it comes to job opportunities. When Total Construction took on a $29-million, regional aged-care project for Churches of Christ, one of our top priorities was to retain as many locals as possible to work on site.

The soon-to-be-completed project, located in Warwick, Queensland, is under the watchful eye of Total’s General Manager – Queensland, Simon Hinneberg. “This is the first new aged-care development to be brought to the town for a long time. Like Total Construction, Churches of Christ is very much about supporting community so it was a great alignment of values,” says Simon.

“One of the biggest challenges was engaging with the local supply chain to ensure access to the best local resources. It was tough but we managed to get most of our subbies and contractors from the Warwick and Toowoomba areas and only had to rely on a small handful of trades from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.”

Another challenge included the presence of a significant amount of rock on site. However, Total Construction managed to minimise excavation by redesigning the foundation systems. “We were able to do this because it was an ECI [Early Contractor Involvement] project. As such, we were able to work with the design team and the client from the very beginning of the process and overcome obstacles like this before they became a problem. Once we started on site, we were able to accurately map where the rock was so we could further adjust the design and deliver even greater economies.”

As with any project, surprises will always be encountered along the way. “Everyone thought the site used to be farmland but when we started digging up old infrastructure for a drive-in theatre, we soon learnt it was actually the site of the old Warwick Cinema. We even had a visit from a couple of the old residents – guys in their 90s – and we were chatting to them about it. It was another great opportunity to get to know the locals.”
